'Hatfields and McCoys' review, night 2: 'I rue the day I saved your life

Those who were part of the record-setting aud for the first part of History's 'Hatfields & McCoys' stuck around for round two.

Tuesday's two-hour episode drew 13.1 million, down just a notch from the 13.9 million who tuned in on Memorial Day. In the 18-49 demo, Tuesday's episode drew 4.7 million in the 18-49 demo and 5.8 million in the 25-54 demo, which is more of the cabler's sweet spot.

The two nights are now ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, as the most-watched ad-supported non-sports cable telecasts of all time. Previous record holder was "Crossfire Trail," a TV movie starring Tom Selleck that drew 12.5 million when it aired on TNT in 2001.

The third, and final, episode of the six-hour miniseries airs Wednesday night.

"Hatfields & McCoys" details the long-standing hatred between rival families the Hatfields in West Virginia and the McCoys in Kentucky. Kevin Costner stars as Devil Anse Hatfield and Bill Paxton plays Randall McCoy. Co-stars include Mare Winningham, Powers Boothe and Tom Berenger.

Hatfields & McCoys has proven an early ratings bonanza for the History Channel, which today released ratings boasting of “over 17 million people” total watching the premiere and encore broadcast last night. Working once again with Costner, director Kevin Reynolds – who did Waterworld (if you can say anyone “did” that) and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves – summons up a vivid tableau of backwoods life. Costner, as Devil Anse Hatfield (now, don’t go thinkin’ ’bout naming your first-born “Devil,” I don’t care how popular this miniseries is), and Bill Paxton, as Randall McCoy, head up the clans that clash, and both have been giving distinctively soulful performances.
The epic squabble, for those just tuning in from America’s Got Talent: Just after the Civil War, friends and side-by-side Confederate soldiers Hatfield and McCoy return to their homes and grow apart. Arguments and misunderstandings grow like weeds between their respective plots of land in West Virginia and Kentucky. Everything from timber rights to the supposed theft of a pig eventually results in bloody fistfights and deadly gun battles.

Lil Wayne's Name Didn't Come Up In Pusha T's 'Exodus

Rejoice, because Weezy is coming to one of America's most accessible department stores. Beginning June 1, Lil Wayne's apparel line TRUKFIT will be available at select Macy's locations across the country and Macy's.com. Fans will be able to purchase a wide range of TRUKFIT's signature t-shirts, sweatshirts and caps. TRUKFIT is available in men's and boy's sizes at a moderate price point.

Launched to positive press reception in January 2012 at Agenda Long Beach, TRUKFIT is a contemporary street wear line that draws influence from many aspects of pop culture including music, street art and action sports. An acronym that takes its name from the values The Reason You Kill For It, Trukfit's style philosophy overlooks trends, rather placing a sharp focus on comfort, durability, quality fabrics, bold graphics and the perfect fit.

"Trukfit is a state of mind," says Mike Morris, Trukfit brand director. "It is about being oneself, having fun, being free and being able to express all these elements. We are thrilled to be able to offer Trukfit at Macy's, an iconic retailer with as much as energy and heart as our brand. Lil Wayne is a favorite rapper and Macy's is a favorite shopping destination – a perfect fit!

"Pusha kept tellin' me, 'I need something dark, man. The album sounds crazy, but I still need somethin' for my fans'. So I was like, 'I got you, give me by six o'clock,' " Rico recalled. "I went down to the studio and I was just listening to Biggie. I was just playin' pure Biggie. So ["What's Beef"] came on and once I heard [B.I.G.'s] 'ha-ha-ha-ha' [vocal] I was like, 'Oh sh--'."

If Pusha's "Exodus" left things up to interpretation, Weezy's dis did not. On "Ghoulish," Tunechi took direct aim with lines like "Brrrr, what happened to that boy/ He was talkin' sh-- we put a clappin' to that boy" making direct reference to Birdman and Pusha's 2002 single "What Happened to That Boy."

Rico, a Brooklyn native, says he hasn't heard Wayne's record in its entirety, but did admit that it was playing in the background during a Memorial Day weekend barbecue. And while he doesn't know whether Pusha plans to respond, the producer confirmed that he and the Virginia lyricist will collaborate more in the future, as he is slated to produce about half of Pusha's next solo album.

NSW upper house backs gay marriage

Greens MP Cate Faehrmann introduced a private members' motion last week for the Commonwealth Marriage Act to be amended, with MPs from both major parties split on the issue.

The Legislative Council voted 22 to 16 in favour of the motion.

Coalition MPs, including National Trevor Kahn, previously expressed support for move that calls on the Federal Government to allow gay marriage.

But Liberal Matthew Mason-Cox today said same-sex marriage could lead to polygamy.

"Indeed, if one was to take the notion of equality of marriage to its logical conclusion, then there would be no reason to stand in the way of polygamist marriages, or other variants," he told the chamber today.

During the debate, Labor MP Helen Westwood described being in a lesbian relationship and having eight grandchildren.
''There's just no evidence that my children or my grandchildren have been disadvantaged by being raised in a same-sex relationship,'' she told the chamber.
But Labor's leader in the upper house, Luke Foley, who hails from the party's left faction, said that as a practising Catholic he believed civil unions were more appropriate for gay couples than marriage.
''I do believe that homosexual relationships are different to a married relationship,'' he said, adding a ''procreative relationship open to the possibility of children'' was an ''essential feature of marriage''.
Liberal member Matthew Mason-Cox argued same-sex marriage could lead to polygamy.
''Indeed, if one was to take the notion of equality of marriage to its logical conclusion, then there would be no reason to stand in the way of polygamist marriages, or other variants,'' he said.
''This is the so-called slippery slope in this debate which has manifested itself overseas in some jurisdictions where same-sex marriage has been allowed.''
Fellow Liberal Catherine Cusack, however, said denying gay people the right to marriage caused ''enormous harm and hurt'' and was a 19th century approach to relationships.
''The rights that we have all been able to take for granted - myself, my husband, my parents - ought to be extended to all couples,'' she said.
Premier Barry O'Farrell declined to confirm whether he backed the motion.
''It's an issue for the upper house, should it come to the lower house I'll make my views clear then,'' he said.
Mr O'Farrell dismissed suggestions the motion would put pressure on federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to allow a conscience vote when several gay marriage bills come before federal parliament.
But Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young and Australian Marriage Equality convenor Alex Greenwich said the motion had put pressure on Mr Abbott to allow a conscience vote on the issue.
The upper house passed an amendment from Nationals MP Trevor Khan for religious groups to be exempted from having to perform gay marriage ceremonies.
But the Legislative Council rejected amendments from Christian Democrats MP Fred Nile and Labor's Greg Donnelly, which noted the European Court of Human Rights did not consider homosexual marriage to be an inherent right.

Ellyse Perry

Ellyse Alexandra Perry, born 3 November 1990 is an Australian sportswoman who made her debut for both the Australian cricket and football (soccer) teams at the age of 16. She played her first cricket international in July 2007 before earning her first football cap for Australia a month later. Perry is the youngest person, male or female, to represent Australia in cricket and the first Australian woman to have appeared in both cricket and association football World Cups.
Perry was fast-tracked to make her One Day International (ODI) debut for Australia against New Zealand before playing a single match for her state New South Wales in the Women's National Cricket League (WNCL). In 2007–08, she made her debut for New South Wales and won the WNCL with them, and at the end of the season, she made her Test debut in Bowral against England. During the season, she was the player of the match in her Twenty20 international debut against England, and made her maiden ODI half-century against New Zealand.
Perry took 4/23 in the final of the 2008–09 WNCL to help New South Wales defend their title. She then took nine wickets as Australia came fourth in the 2009 World Cup held in Australia. She was ineffective during the 2009 ICC Women's World Twenty20 in England, taking only two wickets in Australia's four matches.
In 2009–10, Perry took 22 wickets and scored 148 runs as New South Wales won the WNCL again. She then took 18 wickets in 10 ODIs against New Zealand at the end of the season, as the Australians won all the matches. During these matches, Perry took her maiden five-wicket ODI haul. Perry played in each of Australia's matches at the 2010 World Twenty20 in the West Indies, taking 3/18 and being named player of the match in the final as Australia defeated New Zealand by three runs to claim the title.
A defender, Perry represented Australia at the 2008 Asian Cup, and scored in one of the matches. She played for the Central Coast Mariners in the Australian W-League during the 2008–09 season, before transferring to Canberra United the following year. In June 2010, Perry began her media career by hosting the soccer-related show Football Stars of Tomorrow, screened on the digital sports channel One HD.

Perry was part of the 2010 World Twenty20 winning team in the West Indies and played in all of Australia's matches. She was the player of the match in the final. In the first warm-up match against New Zealand, which Australia lost by 18 runs, Perry took 1/22 from three overs, removing Elizabeth Perry for 10. She then made 2 not out from 2 balls at the end of Australia's innings. In the last warm-up match against Pakistan, Perry was not required to bat as Australia made 5/166. She ran out Pakistani captain Sana Mir and bowled Nida Dar and Batool Fatima to end with 2/13 from 3.3 overs as Australia won by 82 runs.
Australia were grouped with defending champions England, South Africa and the West Indies. In the first match, Perry caught Jenny Gunn from the bowling of Sthalekar and then bowled Katherine Brunt as England collapsed late in their innings, losing 6/22, leaving 15 balls unused. During Australia's pursuit of 105 for victory, Perry came in at 5/60 in the 12th over and made 1 from 3 balls before Gunn ran her out, leaving Australia at 6/62 in the 14th over. This was part of a passage of play during which Australia lost 3/18 in 29 balls, and at 7/63, they needed 42 runs from 34 for victory with three wickets in hand. Eventually, Australia recovered, before Rene Farrell was run out going for the winning run from the third last ball available, leaving the scores tied.
A Super Over eventuated, and both teams made 2/6, suffering run outs in an attempt to secure a seventh run on the final ball. Australia was awarded the match because they had hit more sixes in the match—Jess Cameron scored the solitary six.
In the next match against South Africa, Perry made five runs from ten balls before being caught, the last player dismissed as Australia ended on 155 with three balls unused. This was part of a collapse in the death overs as Australia lost their last six wickets for 16, including the last four wickets for four runs. Perry came in to bat after Australia lost both Cameron and Sarah Elliott with the score on 139, and saw three partners leave before being dismissed herself.[21] In the run-chase, South Africa reached 0/33 from 5.3 overs before Perry ran out their captain Cri-Zelda Brits. Perry later bowled Chloe Tryon late in the innings and ended with 1/16 from three overs as Australia completed a 22-run win.
Perry was not required to bat as Australia finished on 7/133 in the final group match against the West Indies. In the second over of the run-chase, Perry ran out Juliana Nero with a throw to Rene Farrell. She later had Deandra Dottin caught behind for a duck, before dismissing Pamela Lavine in the penultimate over. Perry ended with 2/19 from three overs as Australia won by nine runs to finish the group stage unbeaten at the top of their quartet.
Australia went on to face India in the semi-final, and Perry took 1/19 from her four overs as India made 5/119. At the start of the 17th over bowled by Perry, India were on 2/88, and the partnership between Harmanpreet Kaur and Poonam Raut had yielded 57 runs. Perry ran out Kaur from the first ball of the over, and two balls later, the Indian captain Jhulan Goswami was run out by Blackwell. Perry then had Raut caught from the next ball and India had lost 3/1 in four balls. Perry was required to neither bat nor bowl as the Indians ended with 3/119, which was chased down by the Australians with seven wickets and seven balls to spare.
Australia batted first in the final against New Zealand, and Perry was not required as they reached 106, losing their eighth wicket from the last ball of the innings. New Zealand started their chase solidly, before losing two wickets by the end of the fifth over. Perry's first over was the sixth of the innings, and she dismissed Suzie Bates, who tried to pull but skied the ball down the ground and was caught by Elliott, who ran across from mid-off, for 18. In her following over, the eighth of the innings, Perry uprooted Amy Satterthwaite's off stump with a ball that kept low and New Zealand were in trouble at 4/29 in the eighth over.

In football (soccer), Perry plays as a defender. She played her first match for the Australian national team, an Olympic qualifying match against Hong Kong at the Hong Kong Football Club, on 4 August 2007. She played this match at the age of 16 years and 9 months, and less than two weeks after her international cricket debut. Perry scored a goal in the second minute of the match as Australia won 8–1.
As of July 2008, she has played eleven matches for the national team, including five in the 2008 AFC Women's Asian Cup, where she scored a goal against South Korea. She has also played three matches for the Young Matildas, the Australian youth team.
Her domestic team was the Central Coast Mariners in the Australian W-League during the 2008–09 season.
Perry made her debut against Queensland Roar on Saturday, 15 November 2008 after being substituted on for team-mate Lyndsay Glohe. She then went on to play another 2 games, also off the bench.
Perry left the Central Coast Mariners and began playing for Canberra United at the start of the 2009 W-League season.
At the annual Westfield W-League awards dinner in 2009, Perry was jointly awarded the Young Player of the Year Award with Brisbane Roar's Elise Kellond-Knight and won three club awards for the season – the Player's, Supporter's and overall Club player of the year.
Perry was selected in the Matildas squad for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany. In the Norway vs Australia group game, Perry came on as a late substitute, and thus became the first Australia woman to represent Australia at a senior World Cup in two different sports, namely cricket and association football. Perry was in the starting line-up for the quarter final against Sweden in which match, with Australia down 0–2, Perry scored Australia's opening goal.

Choice of sport

Both cricket and football (soccer) are keen to retain Perry in their sport. She has accepted in interviews that she will probably one day have to choose between them, but for the moment she is pursuing both. In 2010 Perry was faced with the decision whether to play for Australia at the ICC World Twenty20 or at the 2010 AFC Women's Asian Cup which overlapped, of which she chose cricket.
On 29 May 2012 it was reported in the AGE newspaper that Heather Reid, the chief executive of her football club Canberra United FC, had given Perry an ultimatum to choose between football and cricket: "to choose whether she wants to be a full-time Canberra United player and commit to training every day like everyone else does, … Or if she still wants to try and mix her cricket commitment with football, then perhaps she will need to find another club.

Personal

Perry was born in Wahroonga, Sydney. She went to primary school at Arden Anglican School in Beecroft Sydney. She also attended Pymble Ladies College, completing year 12 in 2008 with the title of Sports Captain, Athletics Captain and Cricket Captain She is currently studying economics and social sciences at the University of Sydney.

Ellyse Perry looking for new W-League club

Faced with an ultimatum from W-League champions Canberra United to extinguish the flame of her international cricket career, the dual international will hold talks with Sydney FC coach Alen Stajcic about switching to the Sky Blues.

Both Canberra and Perry were yesterday emphasising that the parting will be amicable, after United told her that the price of continuing to play for the club was a pledge to train four days a week - which is impossible with her cricket commitments.

Having played in both the Ashes and a football World Cup, Perry is determined to continue playing both sports, and Stajcic said he wants to explore what that entails.

"There is a real possibility, let's put it that way," Stajcic said of her signing for Sydney FC. Before anything happens I need to have a talk to her about her commitments and plans for the future, to see how that will pan out. I'm not sure she knows what her cricket commitments are, for instance, further down the line. I also need to have a chat with her about whether she's a good fit for us, and us for her.

Perry was a notable omission from the Canberra premiership side during their 3-2 victory over Brisbane Roar in January, which came after she missed several games in the lead-up to the grand final because of her cricketing commitments.

Canberra United chief executive Heather Reid defended issuing the ultimatum which ordered Perry to quit cricket and commit full-time to the three months of the W-League season.

She said she backed coach Jitka Klimkova's new philosophy about all players putting in the same amount of effort and being treated equally.

"There's not some rules for some players and other rules for other players," Reid told AAP.

"They are a team and to allow one individual to come in and out of that team - that environment does have its challenges and impacts on morale.

"There was a feeling of being let down."

Reid admitted the situation was tough, but said Perry's popularity and celebrity wasn't enough to earn her special privileges.

"I'm being personally criticised for scoring an own-goal or shooting the team in the foot, but ... this is about increasing professionalism in women's sport, even if we're not paid in professional terms.

"You wouldn't have this same situation in rugby league where they allow a rugby union player to come in and out of the squad.

"It demonstrates some leadership and if I was a bloke, they'd probably say it takes some balls."

All up, Perry missed six of Canberra's 12 games during the 2011/12 season - her third with the club.

The Sydneysider, who is also studying a degree in economics and social sciences, has several options, but the first would be to sound out Sydney FC and assess whether they'll be more accommodating with her cricket schedule.

Reid was disappointed in the way the issue snowballed, arguing the ultimatum did not mean Perry would be lost to soccer.

Lawyer paid school fees with clients' cash

David Michael Tansey stole $1,999,081 from 11 clients over a four-and-a-half year period from mid-1999.

He was sentenced to a minimum of two years and six months imprisonment on Thursday in the same court where he once plied his trade, the Victorian Supreme Court.

The former Melbourne barrister and solicitor, who worked for the law firm Lynch and McDonald, pleaded guilty to 25 charges of theft.

Tansey's offences involved 44 separate transactions between the accounts of his clients and his own family trust, his wife's restaurant business and a financial institution of which he was the director.

Tansey, 58, used withdrawals, which ranged from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars, for personal use, including the payment of his son's tuition fees and the purchase of a Melbourne property.

“Though the Legal Practitioners Fidelity Fund compensated victims for their financial losses, themisappropriations nevertheless caused the victims stress and trauma,” he said. “Yet not one of those clients expresses any desire for retribution. Rather, they convey their sense of betrayal and deep disappointment.”

Justice Almond said Tansey had cooperated with investigations into his financial affairs and appeared genuinely remorseful.

“Whilst your previous good character has some broad relevance, it is of little weight when dealing with a breach of trust by a solicitor who is an officer of the court,” he said.

A 2004 investigation by the Law Institute of Victoria revealed Tansey had deposited clients' funds into his accounts to benefit himself and family members.

He used $87,919 from one client to pay rent on a property in Black Rock which he later bought, and stole another $70,000 from the client before repaying $1,738.

In another case he stole $455,000 from the account of one client who had died and left him as the executor of her estate, and $282,520 from the estate of another client to pay for his son's private school fees.

Australia national women's cricket team

Australian women's cricket team played their first Test match in 1934/5, when they lost to England two-nil in a three-Test series. Since then they have improved and are generally considered the best women's cricket team in the world.[citation needed] They have won more World Cups than any other side — winning in 1977/8, 1981/2, 1988/9, 1997/8 and 2004/5.
One of the most remarkable families in the early history of the team were the Shevill sisters. Fernie Blade (née Shevill) played against England in the first Test at Brisbane in 1934-35, and her twin Irene Shevill appeared in the next two. Another sister, Essie Shevill, played in all three of those matches, and her twin Lily Shevill also played for New South Wales.
