Mayer debuts in top spot as Adele falls

But Australian fans hoping this feat would be followed up with a tour announcement will be disappointed as Mayer is due to undergo surgery for a chronic throat problem which could put him out of action for several months.

It was a big week for new releases with quirky piano gal Regina Spektor also debuting in the top 10 with her latest record What We Saw From the Cheap Seats.

Listen: Ladyhawke's latest album Anxiety streamed

Among the albums debuting in the top 20 were By The Horns, the latest solo effort from Julia Stone (No.11), Valtari from popular alt-heroes Sigur Ros (No.14), the Eurovision Song Contest compilation (No.15) and Ladyhawke's much-anticipated second LP Anxiety (No.17).

The death of Robin Gibb had Bee Gee fans buying best-ofs to relive their memories of the brothers' music, with The Ultimate Bee Gees landing in the top 10 (No.7) and The Number Ones debuting at No.23.

It appears fans of the hit TV show The Voice have already downloaded their favourite tunes from contestants with the The Final 24 compilation album making a modest entry at No.26.

Keith Urban's The Story So Far has been pushed to number two.

The Bee Gees have broken into the top 10 - The Ultimate Bee Gees moves into the number seven spot as fans farewell founding member Robin Gibb, who died aged 62.

Flo Rida continues to dominate the singles chart with Whistle, while Chris Brown's new song, Don't Wake Me Up, is at fifth place.

Guy Sebastian's latest offering, Gold, has debuted at number 10.

The Story So Far continues remains in pole position on the country chart. Urban's other album, Greatest Hits: 18 Kids, has fallen four spots to number nine.

A new entry to the country chart, Mr and Mrs by husband and wife duo O'Shea, makes its debut in fourth position.

Delta Goodrem says it was 'genuine love' with Nick Jonas

Now for the first time, Goodrem, 27, has admitted that there was "genuine love" between her and the 18-year-old singer and told why she chose to rebound from a seven-year relationship to have a fling with a teen star.

“Maybe it’s that I’m interested in challenges," she told Karl Stefanovic in an "anything goes" interview for 60 Minutes.

"Maybe I’m one of these spirits who goes, ‘Ooh, what is this lesson here? What am I learning here?’ . . . There was a genuine love, definitely.”

In previous interviews, the singer refused to be drawn on her relationship with the youngest member of the Jonas Brothers, which ended in February this year after 10 months of dating.

In her interview for the latest issue of Vogue, all she had to say was: "I only have good things to say about Nick."

But this time, Goodrem was much more expansive.

Referring to her failed engagement to Irish pop singer Brian McFadden, the star she says she “jumped” from the relationship into the arms of Jonas because she was looking for something "completely different".

It was a respite from the tumultuous relationship with the Australia’s Got Talent judge which left her "really unhappy".

"Do I wish that it ended earlier? Yes," she told Stefanovic of her split with McFadden. "Do I wish I had the courag

Confidential hears the couple - who were together for seven years before breaking up almost 12 months ago - signed a confidentiality agreement when they split agreeing not to talk publicly about the reasons for their parting.

While management for both issued a strict "no comment" yesterday, rumours abound that the contract is now being reviewed by McFadden HQ.

"(Brian) is not too happy with what (Delta) has said after they both (agreed) to not speak about what happened between them," a source said.

"It's not as if he's going to sue her. But she shouldn't be talking about what she's talking about."

Talking to 60 Minutes on Sunday, Goodrem said of McFadden: "Do I wish that it ended earlier? Yes. Do I wish I had the courage to leave earlier? Yes, I do. I think what we came to is that we were very different people - extremely different people."

It follows comments in Vogue last week that she was "really unhappy".

"I didn't know how to get out. I learned. I got there in the end," she told the mag.

McFadden tweeted in reply: "Sometimes silence is golden. People love to try and deflect attention from their own downfalls onto others.

"Randomly want to thank (fiancee) Vogue Williams for making me the happiest man on the planet.

Four-day weekend of celebrations to open Hamer Hall

Arts Centre Melbourne chief executive Judith Isherwood said the ballot was new for the centre and a way to recognise that the $135.8 million spent on the renovations were due to the largesse of the taxpayer.
Advertisement: Story continues below
''The early vision for the arts centre was that it was to be for the people. [When] it was closed … you could see people going up and rattling doors - it's in such a perfect position on the city's edge. This is about returning it to the people and giving them a reason to go in and explore.''
The two concerts will feature many artists who have performed in the hall, including Eddie Perfect who sang in Melbourne Chorale performances as a teenager.
''The good thing about the hall is that it's an intimidating stage - it is the Melbourne concert hall after all,'' Perfect said.
''It's a great space. Spending money on it is something the hall deserves.''
MSO concertmaster Wilma Smith will lead the Australian National Academy of Music Orchestra to take the new acoustics through their paces.
As well as k.d. lang, engaged exclusively for the event, the concerts include soprano Rachelle Durkin, musical theatre star Caroline O'Connor, and singers Archie Roach and Lior.
The hall's exterior will be lit by lighting designer Martin Kinnane and set designer Brian Thompson will produce a 15-metre installation on the lawn.
Other events include tours, Kylie Minogue and Barry Humphries exhibitions, and entertainment in the newly expanded foyer.

Cat Stevens

Yusuf Islam, born Steven Demetre Georgiou, 21 July 1948, commonly known by his former stage name Cat Stevens, is an English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, educator, philanthropist, and prominent convert to Islam.

His early 1970s record albums Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat were both certified triple platinum in the United States by the RIAA. His 1972 album Catch Bull at Four sold half a million copies in the first two weeks of release alone and was Billboard's number-one LP for three consecutive weeks He has also earned two ASCAP songwriting awards in consecutive years for "The First Cut Is the Deepest", which has been a hit single for four different artists.

Stevens converted to Islam in December 1977 and adopted the name Yusuf Islam the following year. In 1979, he auctioned all his guitars for charity and left his music career to devote himself to educational and philanthropic causes in the Muslim community. He has been given several awards for his work in promoting peace in the world, including the 2003 World Award, the 2004 Man for Peace Award, and the 2007 Mediterranean Prize for Peace. In 2006, he returned to pop music with his first album of new pop songs in 28 years, entitled An Other Cup. He now goes professionally by the single name Yusuf. His most recent album, Roadsinger, was released on 5 May 2009.

Salman Rushdie controversy

The singer attracted controversy in 1989, during an address to students at London's Kingston University, where he was asked about the fatwa calling for the death of author Salman Rushdie. The media interpreted his response as support for the fatwa. Yusuf released a statement the following day denying that he supported vigilantism, and claiming that he had merely recounted the legal Islamic punishment for blasphemy. In a BBC interview, he displayed a newspaper clipping from that period, with quotes from his statement. Subsequent comments made by him in 1989 on a British television programme were also seen as being in support of the fatwa. In a statement in the FAQ section of one of his Web sites, Yusuf asserted that while he regretted the comments, he was joking and that the show was improperly edited.[65] In the years since these comments, he has repeatedly denied ever calling for the death of Rushdie or supporting the fatwa.

11 September 2001 attacks

I wish to express my heartfelt horror at the indiscriminate terrorist attacks committed against innocent people of the United States yesterday. While it is still not clear who carried out the attack, it must be stated that no right-thinking follower of Islam could possibly condone such an action. The Qur'an equates the murder of one innocent person with the murder of the whole of humanity. We pray for the families of all those who lost their lives in this unthinkable act of violence as well as all those injured; I hope to reflect the feelings of all Muslims and people around the world whose sympathies go out to the victims of this sorrowful moment.

He appeared on videotape on a VH1 pre-show for the October 2001 Concert for New York City, condemning the attacks and singing his song "Peace Train" for the first time in public in more than 20 years, as an a cappella version. He also donated a portion of his box-set royalties to the Fund for victims' families, and the rest to orphans in underdeveloped countries. During the same year, Yusuf Islam dedicated time and effort in joining the Forum Against Islamophobia and Racism, an organisation that worked towards battling misperceptions and acts against others because of their religious beliefs or their racial identity (or both), after many Muslims reported a backlash against them due in part to the grief caused by the events in the United States on 9-11.

Denial of entry into the United States

On 21 September 2004, Yusuf was on a United Airlines flight from London to Washington, travelling to a meeting with U.S. entertainer Dolly Parton, who had recorded "Peace Train" several years earlier and was planning to include another Cat Stevens song on an upcoming album. While the plane was in flight, his name was flagged as being on a no fly list. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers alerted the United States Transportation Security Administration, which then diverted his flight to Bangor, Maine, where he was detained by officers from the Department of Homeland Security.

The following day, Yusuf was denied entry and flown back to the United Kingdom. A spokesman for Homeland Security claimed there were "concerns of ties he may have to potential terrorist-related activities". The Israeli government had deported Yusuf in 2000 over allegations that he provided funding to the Palestinian organisation Hamas; he denied doing so knowingly. "I have never knowingly supported or given money to Hamas," says Yusuf, who repeatedly has condemned terrorism and Islamic extremism. "At the time I was reported to have done it, I didn't know such a group existed. Some people give a political interpretation to charity. We were horrified at how people were suffering in the Holy Land. However, the United States Department of Homeland Security added him to a "watch list". The US removal provoked a small international controversy, and led British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw to complain personally to US Secretary of State Colin Powell at the United Nations. Powell responded by stating that the watchlist was under review, adding, "I think we have that obligation to review these matters to see if we are right".

Yusuf believed his inclusion on a "watch list" may have simply been an error: a mistaken identification of him for a man with the same name, but different spelling. On 1 October 2004 Yusuf requested the removal of his name, "I remain bewildered by the decision of the US authorities to refuse me entry to the United States". According to a statement by Yusuf, the man on the list was named "Youssef Islam", indicating that Yusuf himself was not the suspected terrorism supporter. Romanization of Arabic names can easily result in different spellings: the transliteration of the Islamic name for Joseph (Yusuf's chosen name) lists a dozen spellings.

Two years later, in December 2006 Yusuf was admitted without incident into the United States for several radio concert performances and interviews to promote his new record. Yusuf said of the incident at the time, that, "No reason was ever given, but being asked to repeat the spelling of my name again and again, made me think it was a fairly simple mistake of identity. Rumors which circulated after made me imagine otherwise.

Yusuf has written a song about the 2004 exclusion from the U.S., entitled "Boots and Sand", recorded in the summer of 2008 and featuring Paul McCartney, Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton, and Terry Sylvester.

Cat Stevens Premieres New Musical

THE long spiritual journey of Yusuf - the artist formerly known as Yusuf Islam, and before that as Cat Stevens, and somewhere in the mists of time as plain old Steven Georgiou - began when he fell ill at the height of his first blaze of fame in the late 1960s.

''My first experience was a dazzling one, as an 18-year-old with a hit record and girls chasing me all over Europe,'' he says during a relaxed 45-minute chat in the upper circle of the Princess Theatre, where his musical Moonshadow this week had its world premiere. ''There I was on tour with Hendrix and everything that was a consequence of that. I didn't learn that much, I just succumbed to the moment, and that was stardom.''

Did you, like Hendrix, succumb to drugs too? ''For sure, we all did that. And because of that I contracted tuberculosis [at 21]. That was an important inoculation, because I knew then that whatever I did next I must keep more control, I must keep my own interests at heart, and not worry too much about what the manager and agents, and even the public, were saying.''

Like Queen's We Will Rock You, Moonshadow has a sci-fi plot. The story centers on main characters Stormy and Lisa who as childhood friends become separated but meet again years later. Stormy is dragged into a dark world with an evil witch and becomes obsessed with his own stardom but awakes from his nightmarish hell before it is too late to reclaim his life.

Some of the musical's songs like "Matthew and Son" and "A Bad Night" date back to 1967. For fans of Cat Stevens' music, there are new songs you can only hear currently in the musical. The show opens with the brand-new song "World of Darkness.

Midnight in Paris is an upcoming American romantic comedy film written and directed by Woody Allen, scheduled to premiere at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival in May. It is being produced by Mediapro and Allen's Gravier Productions, and stars Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, Carla Bruni and Adrien Brody.

Carla Bruni was recruited by Allen for a role as a museum director. There were false reports that Allen re-filmed Bruni's scenes with Léa Seydoux, but Seydoux rebuffed these rumours revealing she had an entirely separate role in the film. Allen also shot down reports that a scene with Bruni required over thirty takes: "I am appalled. I read these things and I could not believe my eyes...These are not exaggerations, but inventions from scratch. There is absolutely no truth." He continued to describe Bruni as "very professional" and insisted he was pleased with her scenes, stating that "every frame will appear in the film.
Filming locations include John XXIII Square (near Notre Dame), on the Île de la Cité itself, and near the Panthéon. The film is the first Allen has shot entirely in Paris, though both Love and Death (1975) and Everyone Says I Love You (1996) were partially filmed there.
The film is co-produced by Allen's Gravier Productions and the Spanish-based Mediapro.

A romantic comedy about a family traveling to the French capital for business. The party includes a young engaged couple forced to confront the illusion that a life different from their own is better.

Lucas Neill

Lucas Edward Neill, born 9 March 1978 is an Australian professional footballer who currently plays for UAE Pro-League club Al Jazira and is the captain of the Australian national team. Neill plays as a defender, who commonly plays as a centre back as well as a full back. Neill had spent almost 15 years of his career playing in England. He represented Australia at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the 2007 AFC Asian Cup, the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and also the 2011 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar. On 6 October 2006 he was named the 50th captain of the Australian national team.

Background

Neill grew up in the Northern Beaches of Sydney and was a student at Wakehurst Public School in Belrose and St Augustine's College in Brookvale, before attending the Australian Institute of Sport on a football scholarship in 1994–95.

Club career
Millwall

Neill joined Millwall on a free transfer in November 1995, making his debut on 17 February against Luton Town in 1996. In almost six years at The Den, he made 174 appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 goals. In September 2001, Neill, by then the longest serving player at the club, submitted a transfer request and shortly after, signed for Blackburn Rovers for an initial fee of £600,000 plus up to £400,000 more depending on appearances.

West Ham United

In January 2007 Neill turned his back on a un-confirmed bid from Liverpool in favour of West Ham United, following the successful transfer of Stephen Warnock from Liverpool to Blackburn. Neill was accused of his primary motivating factor being money, but he later refuted these claims, stating the move was for purely footballing reasons. Neill later alleged to the media that Liverpool had not made him feel truly wanted, and that he had not even spoken to manager Rafael Benítez. Neill made his league debut for the Hammers in February 2007 against Watford, where he picked up a knee injury. He captained the team for the first time during a 3–4 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur the following month and went on to play every remaining game of the season. He became the permanent team captain following Nigel Reo-Coker's transfer to Aston Villa. Neill made his first appearance as team captain in the 1–1 draw against Wigan Athletic on 25 August 2007. Neill scored his only goal for West Ham in a 3–2 away defeat to West Brom in September 2008. At the end of the 2008–09 season Neill rejected a one year contract extension with West Ham, becoming a free agent.

Everton
Neill and national team-mate Tim Cahill playing for Everton in 2009

On 17 September 2009, Neill joined close friend, Tim Cahill at Everton on a free transfer, signing a one-year deal. He was unveiled to the fans at half time during Everton's 4–0 Europa League win at Goodison Park against AEK Athens.

Neill played his first game for Everton on 23 September 2009 in the League Cup, coming on as a second half substitution for Leighton Baines, in their 4–0 victory over Hull City. Neill's first start for Everton in the Premier League was on 25 October 2009 where he played a full match against Bolton Wanderers setting up two goals.
Galatasaray

On 13 January 2010, Neill agreed to join Turkish side Galatasaray. It is believed Neill wanted to leave Everton to secure a longer contract. Neill signed a one-and-a-half-year contract with Galatasaray, linking up with Socceroo teammate Harry Kewell. Neill made his Turkish Super Lig debut for Galatasaray on 24 January 2010 in a 1–0 home win at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium against Gaziantepspor. Neill along with Kewell and several others were released at the end of the 2010–11 season.
Al Jazira

On 19 August 2011 it was announced he had signed a one year contract with UAE Pro League Club Al Jazira. On 2 June 2012 it was announced he had been released by the club.
International career

In October 1996, Neill became the third-youngest player, after Duncan Cummings and Harry Kewell, to debut for the Australian national team[28] when he played in a friendly game against Saudi Arabia in Riyadh, aged 18 years and 7 months. He also competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney with the Australian men's team, the Olyroos.

On 16 November 2005 at Sydney's ANZ Stadium, Neill helped Australia qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup playing the entire game and scoring the Socceroos' second penalty in a shoot-out against Uruguay, after aggregate scores were tied at 1–1 following extra-time. He was named Man of the Match for this game.

Neill started all four of Australia's games at the 2006 World Cup. In the closing minutes of Australia's Round of 16 game against Italy, referee Luis Medina Cantalejo adjudged Neill to have fouled Italian fullback Fabio Grosso in the penalty area. Francesco Totti converted the ensuing penalty kick to score and give the Italians a 1–0 victory, knocking Australia out of the cup.

Following the World Cup, Neill expressed his desire to captain his national side and on 6 October 2006 was named as the 50th player to captain Australia. On 7 October 2006 he made his debut as the Socceroo's captain in a 1–1 friendly against Paraguay, in Brisbane. Four days later, in Sydney, he captained Australia again in an Asian Cup qualifying game against Bahrain, which Australia won 2–0. On 2 June 2007, Neill captained the Socceroos again in a friendly match against Uruguay at Sydney's Telstra Stadium in which Australia lost 2–1.

On 13 July 2007, in the dying seconds of the Socceroo's 3–1 loss to Iraq, Neill verbally abused the referee. He received his second yellow card and was sent off, capping a disappointing performance by the Australian side. In the quarter finals of the Asian Cup, Neill missed a crucial penalty in a shootout against Japan which resulted in Australia's elimination from the cup.[33] Neill played his 50th game for Australia in a World Cup Qualifier against Japan, a game that Australia won 2–1 with Tim Cahill scoring both goals.
Controversy

In 2011 Les Murray, an Australian soccer journalist, published a book entitled "The World Game: The Story of How Football Went Global" in which Murray cited an undisclosed source in alleging that Neill had instigated a mutiny just before the Germany vs. Australia game at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Murray alleged that Neill had asked his coach, Pim Verbeek, to leave the room, before describing Verbeek's game-plan as "bullshit" and erasing what the Dutchman had written on a whiteboard, telling the team to play like they normally do. The publication of this story was followed by responses from team members who had been eyewitnesses of the actual events, including Craig Moore, Eugene Galeković and Mile Jedinak, clarifying that such an event, as portrayed in Murray's book, had never occurred. Neill himself protested that before the Germany game it was Mark Schwarzer, and not Neill himself, who had given the team pep talk. A few days after the allegations hit the news, Les Murray retracted his allegations with a full apology, with an undertaking that future editions of his book would have the relevant portion deleted.
