Anthony Warlow

Anthony Warlow (born 18 November 1961 in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia) is an Australian opera and musical theatre performer, noted for his character acting and considerable vocal range (from tenor to baritone).

He is married to Celia and they have a daughter, Phoebe Rose.

Opera

His opera roles include major roles in Die Fledermaus (as "Gabriel Eisenstein"), The Magic Flute (as "Papageno"), A Midsummer Night's Dream (as "Puck") and The Tales of Hoffman.
Gilbert and Sullivan

His Gilbert and Sullivan roles for Opera Australia include the featured comedic role of "Ko-Ko" in The Mikado (2004/2009), "Archibald Grosvenor" in Patience (1996), "Pirate King" in The Pirates of Penzance (2006-2007/2010) and in the 2005 double-bill of Trial by Jury (as the "Learned Judge") and H.M.S. Pinafore (as "Captain Corcoran"). Apart from The Mikado, these Gilbert and Sullivan productions are available on DVD. In 1987, Warlow also performed a one man show originally written for John Reed, called A Song to Sing, O, about George Grossmith, the comedian who originated the principal comic roles for Gilbert and Sullivan from 1877 through the 1880s.
Other performances

Warlow performed Advance Australia Fair at the 2008 NRL Grand Final on 5 October 2008.
Phantom of the Opera

2007-2009

Warlow first portrayed the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera in the original Australian production, circa 1990.

It was announced in October 2006 that Phantom would reopen in Melbourne the following year and that Warlow had agreed to reprise his role as "The Phantom".

Phantom reopened in Melbourne at the Princess Theatre, its original home, on Thursday, 19 July 2007. Alongside Warlow, Australia's Ana Marina and John Bowles were cast as Christine Daae and Raoul, the Vicomte de Chagny. Although he performed for the industry opening night, Warlow was struck down by a bout of influenza that had also claimed many of the other cast and crew and he missed the first two and a half weeks of the show's Melbourne season. Understudy Simon Pryce performed in his place until Warlow made a triumphant return on 9 August 2007.

Unlike the original Australian Phantom, Warlow played the Phantom for the two-year tour of Australia and New Zealand. The Phantom of the Opera opened at Melbourne's Princess Theatre on 28 July 2007, then at Brisbane's Lyric Theatre in February 2008 followed by Sydney's Lyric Theatre in May 2008. After closing in Sydney on 14 September, the production moved to Auckland, New Zealand and following a holiday break, subsequently opened in Perth in February 2009. The last stop on the tour was Adelaide where Warlow donned the mask for the final time on 23 May 2009. Warlow recently appeared as a guest at the 25th Anniversary Concert of The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
The Pirates of Penzance

Opera Australia — 2006–2007 tour

Between 2 August 2006 and 2 June 2007, Warlow appeared in the Opera Australia production of "The Pirates of Penzance" (a popular Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera), in which he played the role of the "Pirate King" — with performances during 2006 in Sydney, New South Wales (at the Sydney Opera House), in Canberra, ACT and in Brisbane, Queensland (at the Lyric Theatre, Queensland Performing Arts Centre), as well as enjoying full houses in Melbourne, Victoria in 2007.

Anthony Warlow's Pirate King appeared in dress, voice and mannerism very similar to Captain Jack Sparrow from "Pirates of the Caribbean". In a press interview in Brisbane, Anthony Warlow said that he had deliberately based his Pirate King on Johnny Depp's character from "Pirates of the Caribbean" so that people who may not know the opera but are aware of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy of movies could enjoy the opera more. David Hobson (as "Frederic") and Suzanne Johnston (as "Ruth") also appeared in this production. The lead female role of Mabel, initially played by Emma Matthews was taken over by soprano Taryn Fiebig for most of the tour. John Bolton-Wood, originally cast as "Major-General Stanley" was replaced by Reg Livermore for the Melbourne season, and the role of the "Sergeant of Police" in Melbourne given to Shane Lorencev after the departure of bass Richard Alexander, the original "Sergeant".

This production of "The Pirates of Penzance" was shown on television by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation on Saturday 9 December 2006. A DVD of the production was subsequently released.
Health and work

Anthony Warlow was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 1992, during the early publicity for the arena production of Jesus Christ Superstar where he was to appear as Pilate. This forced him to put his career on hold for about a year while he battled the disease, and his role in the production was given to John Waters. He returned to the performance circuit in the second half of 1993 with a national concert tour for the launch of his Back In The Swing album. He has since done promotional work for the Leukaemia Foundation of Australia.

His fourth solo album, Midnight Dreaming, reached the top ten of the Australian Aria Charts. Warlow also briefly appeared on the ARIA Singles Chart in 1998 with the double A-side single "Beauty School Dropout/My Prayer". Warlow was back on television, in a concert performance, on the night of 24 December 2006 (the concert was shown by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation).

On Doctor Zhivago's opening night in Sydney (February 2011), Warlow tore a calf muscle four hours before the show was due to start, and was thus cut short. Understudy Anton Berezin covered the role and after about a week's worth of rest, Warlow was back on the boards performing to critical acclaim.
Musical Notable musical roles include lead roles in The Phantom of the Opera (as "The Phantom"), The Secret Garden (as "Archibald Craven"), Annie (as Daddy Warbucks), Guys and Dolls (as "Sky Masterson"), My Fair Lady (as "Henry Higgins"), Jekyll and Hyde (original gothic thriller cast recording only, as "Dr. Henry Jekyll / Edward Hyde"), Man of La Mancha (as Don Quixote), and A Little Night Music (as Frederik Egerman), as well as a significant supporting role in Les Misérables (as Enjolras). Circa 1988, he was internationally regarded as the best Enjolras and was honoured by being selected for the Complete Symphonic Recording, along with leading Les Misérables performers from around the world. This was arguably his break-through role, as he was cast as the Phantom as the Australian tour of Les Misérables was ending. Currently he is performing the role of Doctor Yurii Zhivago in the new musical adaptation of Boris Pasternak's novel, Doctor Zhivago. From 5 January 2012 he will be reprising his role as Daddy Warbucks in Annie at the Lyric Theatre, Star City for a strictly limited season of 12 weeks.

Mayer debuts in top spot as Adele falls

But Australian fans hoping this feat would be followed up with a tour announcement will be disappointed as Mayer is due to undergo surgery for a chronic throat problem which could put him out of action for several months.

It was a big week for new releases with quirky piano gal Regina Spektor also debuting in the top 10 with her latest record What We Saw From the Cheap Seats.

Listen: Ladyhawke's latest album Anxiety streamed

Among the albums debuting in the top 20 were By The Horns, the latest solo effort from Julia Stone (No.11), Valtari from popular alt-heroes Sigur Ros (No.14), the Eurovision Song Contest compilation (No.15) and Ladyhawke's much-anticipated second LP Anxiety (No.17).

The death of Robin Gibb had Bee Gee fans buying best-ofs to relive their memories of the brothers' music, with The Ultimate Bee Gees landing in the top 10 (No.7) and The Number Ones debuting at No.23.

It appears fans of the hit TV show The Voice have already downloaded their favourite tunes from contestants with the The Final 24 compilation album making a modest entry at No.26.

Keith Urban's The Story So Far has been pushed to number two.

The Bee Gees have broken into the top 10 - The Ultimate Bee Gees moves into the number seven spot as fans farewell founding member Robin Gibb, who died aged 62.

Flo Rida continues to dominate the singles chart with Whistle, while Chris Brown's new song, Don't Wake Me Up, is at fifth place.

Guy Sebastian's latest offering, Gold, has debuted at number 10.

The Story So Far continues remains in pole position on the country chart. Urban's other album, Greatest Hits: 18 Kids, has fallen four spots to number nine.

A new entry to the country chart, Mr and Mrs by husband and wife duo O'Shea, makes its debut in fourth position.

Johnny Cash lives on with The Essential Johnny Cash collection jumping nine spots to claim eighth position.

Delta Goodrem says it was 'genuine love' with Nick Jonas

Now for the first time, Goodrem, 27, has admitted that there was "genuine love" between her and the 18-year-old singer and told why she chose to rebound from a seven-year relationship to have a fling with a teen star.

“Maybe it’s that I’m interested in challenges," she told Karl Stefanovic in an "anything goes" interview for 60 Minutes.

"Maybe I’m one of these spirits who goes, ‘Ooh, what is this lesson here? What am I learning here?’ . . . There was a genuine love, definitely.”

In previous interviews, the singer refused to be drawn on her relationship with the youngest member of the Jonas Brothers, which ended in February this year after 10 months of dating.

In her interview for the latest issue of Vogue, all she had to say was: "I only have good things to say about Nick."

But this time, Goodrem was much more expansive.

Referring to her failed engagement to Irish pop singer Brian McFadden, the star she says she “jumped” from the relationship into the arms of Jonas because she was looking for something "completely different".

It was a respite from the tumultuous relationship with the Australia’s Got Talent judge which left her "really unhappy".

"Do I wish that it ended earlier? Yes," she told Stefanovic of her split with McFadden. "Do I wish I had the courag

Confidential hears the couple - who were together for seven years before breaking up almost 12 months ago - signed a confidentiality agreement when they split agreeing not to talk publicly about the reasons for their parting.

While management for both issued a strict "no comment" yesterday, rumours abound that the contract is now being reviewed by McFadden HQ.

"(Brian) is not too happy with what (Delta) has said after they both (agreed) to not speak about what happened between them," a source said.

"It's not as if he's going to sue her. But she shouldn't be talking about what she's talking about."

Talking to 60 Minutes on Sunday, Goodrem said of McFadden: "Do I wish that it ended earlier? Yes. Do I wish I had the courage to leave earlier? Yes, I do. I think what we came to is that we were very different people - extremely different people."

It follows comments in Vogue last week that she was "really unhappy".

"I didn't know how to get out. I learned. I got there in the end," she told the mag.

McFadden tweeted in reply: "Sometimes silence is golden. People love to try and deflect attention from their own downfalls onto others.

"Randomly want to thank (fiancee) Vogue Williams for making me the happiest man on the planet.

Four-day weekend of celebrations to open Hamer Hall

Arts Centre Melbourne chief executive Judith Isherwood said the ballot was new for the centre and a way to recognise that the $135.8 million spent on the renovations were due to the largesse of the taxpayer.
Advertisement: Story continues below
''The early vision for the arts centre was that it was to be for the people. [When] it was closed … you could see people going up and rattling doors - it's in such a perfect position on the city's edge. This is about returning it to the people and giving them a reason to go in and explore.''
The two concerts will feature many artists who have performed in the hall, including Eddie Perfect who sang in Melbourne Chorale performances as a teenager.
''The good thing about the hall is that it's an intimidating stage - it is the Melbourne concert hall after all,'' Perfect said.
''It's a great space. Spending money on it is something the hall deserves.''
MSO concertmaster Wilma Smith will lead the Australian National Academy of Music Orchestra to take the new acoustics through their paces.
As well as k.d. lang, engaged exclusively for the event, the concerts include soprano Rachelle Durkin, musical theatre star Caroline O'Connor, and singers Archie Roach and Lior.
The hall's exterior will be lit by lighting designer Martin Kinnane and set designer Brian Thompson will produce a 15-metre installation on the lawn.
Other events include tours, Kylie Minogue and Barry Humphries exhibitions, and entertainment in the newly expanded foyer.

Cat Stevens

Yusuf Islam, born Steven Demetre Georgiou, 21 July 1948, commonly known by his former stage name Cat Stevens, is an English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, educator, philanthropist, and prominent convert to Islam.

His early 1970s record albums Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat were both certified triple platinum in the United States by the RIAA. His 1972 album Catch Bull at Four sold half a million copies in the first two weeks of release alone and was Billboard's number-one LP for three consecutive weeks He has also earned two ASCAP songwriting awards in consecutive years for "The First Cut Is the Deepest", which has been a hit single for four different artists.

Stevens converted to Islam in December 1977 and adopted the name Yusuf Islam the following year. In 1979, he auctioned all his guitars for charity and left his music career to devote himself to educational and philanthropic causes in the Muslim community. He has been given several awards for his work in promoting peace in the world, including the 2003 World Award, the 2004 Man for Peace Award, and the 2007 Mediterranean Prize for Peace. In 2006, he returned to pop music with his first album of new pop songs in 28 years, entitled An Other Cup. He now goes professionally by the single name Yusuf. His most recent album, Roadsinger, was released on 5 May 2009.

Salman Rushdie controversy

The singer attracted controversy in 1989, during an address to students at London's Kingston University, where he was asked about the fatwa calling for the death of author Salman Rushdie. The media interpreted his response as support for the fatwa. Yusuf released a statement the following day denying that he supported vigilantism, and claiming that he had merely recounted the legal Islamic punishment for blasphemy. In a BBC interview, he displayed a newspaper clipping from that period, with quotes from his statement. Subsequent comments made by him in 1989 on a British television programme were also seen as being in support of the fatwa. In a statement in the FAQ section of one of his Web sites, Yusuf asserted that while he regretted the comments, he was joking and that the show was improperly edited.[65] In the years since these comments, he has repeatedly denied ever calling for the death of Rushdie or supporting the fatwa.

11 September 2001 attacks

I wish to express my heartfelt horror at the indiscriminate terrorist attacks committed against innocent people of the United States yesterday. While it is still not clear who carried out the attack, it must be stated that no right-thinking follower of Islam could possibly condone such an action. The Qur'an equates the murder of one innocent person with the murder of the whole of humanity. We pray for the families of all those who lost their lives in this unthinkable act of violence as well as all those injured; I hope to reflect the feelings of all Muslims and people around the world whose sympathies go out to the victims of this sorrowful moment.

He appeared on videotape on a VH1 pre-show for the October 2001 Concert for New York City, condemning the attacks and singing his song "Peace Train" for the first time in public in more than 20 years, as an a cappella version. He also donated a portion of his box-set royalties to the Fund for victims' families, and the rest to orphans in underdeveloped countries. During the same year, Yusuf Islam dedicated time and effort in joining the Forum Against Islamophobia and Racism, an organisation that worked towards battling misperceptions and acts against others because of their religious beliefs or their racial identity (or both), after many Muslims reported a backlash against them due in part to the grief caused by the events in the United States on 9-11.

Denial of entry into the United States

On 21 September 2004, Yusuf was on a United Airlines flight from London to Washington, travelling to a meeting with U.S. entertainer Dolly Parton, who had recorded "Peace Train" several years earlier and was planning to include another Cat Stevens song on an upcoming album. While the plane was in flight, his name was flagged as being on a no fly list. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers alerted the United States Transportation Security Administration, which then diverted his flight to Bangor, Maine, where he was detained by officers from the Department of Homeland Security.

The following day, Yusuf was denied entry and flown back to the United Kingdom. A spokesman for Homeland Security claimed there were "concerns of ties he may have to potential terrorist-related activities". The Israeli government had deported Yusuf in 2000 over allegations that he provided funding to the Palestinian organisation Hamas; he denied doing so knowingly. "I have never knowingly supported or given money to Hamas," says Yusuf, who repeatedly has condemned terrorism and Islamic extremism. "At the time I was reported to have done it, I didn't know such a group existed. Some people give a political interpretation to charity. We were horrified at how people were suffering in the Holy Land. However, the United States Department of Homeland Security added him to a "watch list". The US removal provoked a small international controversy, and led British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw to complain personally to US Secretary of State Colin Powell at the United Nations. Powell responded by stating that the watchlist was under review, adding, "I think we have that obligation to review these matters to see if we are right".

Yusuf believed his inclusion on a "watch list" may have simply been an error: a mistaken identification of him for a man with the same name, but different spelling. On 1 October 2004 Yusuf requested the removal of his name, "I remain bewildered by the decision of the US authorities to refuse me entry to the United States". According to a statement by Yusuf, the man on the list was named "Youssef Islam", indicating that Yusuf himself was not the suspected terrorism supporter. Romanization of Arabic names can easily result in different spellings: the transliteration of the Islamic name for Joseph (Yusuf's chosen name) lists a dozen spellings.

Two years later, in December 2006 Yusuf was admitted without incident into the United States for several radio concert performances and interviews to promote his new record. Yusuf said of the incident at the time, that, "No reason was ever given, but being asked to repeat the spelling of my name again and again, made me think it was a fairly simple mistake of identity. Rumors which circulated after made me imagine otherwise.

Yusuf has written a song about the 2004 exclusion from the U.S., entitled "Boots and Sand", recorded in the summer of 2008 and featuring Paul McCartney, Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton, and Terry Sylvester.

Cat Stevens Premieres New Musical

THE long spiritual journey of Yusuf - the artist formerly known as Yusuf Islam, and before that as Cat Stevens, and somewhere in the mists of time as plain old Steven Georgiou - began when he fell ill at the height of his first blaze of fame in the late 1960s.

''My first experience was a dazzling one, as an 18-year-old with a hit record and girls chasing me all over Europe,'' he says during a relaxed 45-minute chat in the upper circle of the Princess Theatre, where his musical Moonshadow this week had its world premiere. ''There I was on tour with Hendrix and everything that was a consequence of that. I didn't learn that much, I just succumbed to the moment, and that was stardom.''

Did you, like Hendrix, succumb to drugs too? ''For sure, we all did that. And because of that I contracted tuberculosis [at 21]. That was an important inoculation, because I knew then that whatever I did next I must keep more control, I must keep my own interests at heart, and not worry too much about what the manager and agents, and even the public, were saying.''

Like Queen's We Will Rock You, Moonshadow has a sci-fi plot. The story centers on main characters Stormy and Lisa who as childhood friends become separated but meet again years later. Stormy is dragged into a dark world with an evil witch and becomes obsessed with his own stardom but awakes from his nightmarish hell before it is too late to reclaim his life.

Some of the musical's songs like "Matthew and Son" and "A Bad Night" date back to 1967. For fans of Cat Stevens' music, there are new songs you can only hear currently in the musical. The show opens with the brand-new song "World of Darkness.

Midnight in Paris

Midnight in Paris is an upcoming American romantic comedy film written and directed by Woody Allen, scheduled to premiere at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival in May. It is being produced by Mediapro and Allen's Gravier Productions, and stars Owen Wilson, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, Carla Bruni and Adrien Brody.

Production
Carla Bruni was recruited by Allen for a role as a museum director. There were false reports that Allen re-filmed Bruni's scenes with Léa Seydoux, but Seydoux rebuffed these rumours revealing she had an entirely separate role in the film. Allen also shot down reports that a scene with Bruni required over thirty takes: "I am appalled. I read these things and I could not believe my eyes...These are not exaggerations, but inventions from scratch. There is absolutely no truth." He continued to describe Bruni as "very professional" and insisted he was pleased with her scenes, stating that "every frame will appear in the film.
Filming locations include John XXIII Square (near Notre Dame), on the Île de la Cité itself, and near the Panthéon. The film is the first Allen has shot entirely in Paris, though both Love and Death (1975) and Everyone Says I Love You (1996) were partially filmed there.
The film is co-produced by Allen's Gravier Productions and the Spanish-based Mediapro.

Plot
A romantic comedy about a family traveling to the French capital for business. The party includes a young engaged couple forced to confront the illusion that a life different from their own is better.

Cast
The cast includes:
Owen Wilson as Gil
Rachel McAdams as Inez
Kathy Bates as Gertrude Stein
Adrien Brody as Salvador Dali
Carla Bruni as Museum Guide
Marion Cotillard as Adriana
Michael Sheen as Paul
Gad Elmaleh as Detective Tisserant
Kurt Fuller as John
Tom Hiddleston as F. Scott Fitzgerald
Allison Pill as Zelda Fitzgerald
Mimi Kennedy as Wendy
Elsa Pataky
Léa Seydoux as Gabrielle
