John Lydon: 'Illnesses and pain made me

John Lydon's Public Image Ltd are an the verge of releasing their first album in 20 years.

Post-Sex Pistols, Johnny Rotten became John Lydon and launched a new era as Public Image Ltd in 1978.

After fourteen years of strident post-punk, the band broke up, and then reformed in 2009 to tour. This lead to a new album, and that new album is This Is PiL.

It's their first in 20 years ' twelve tracks recorded in Steve Winwood's UK studio and released on their own PiL Official record label. The band currently consists of Lydon, Bruce Smith on drums, Lu Edmonds on guitars and keys, and Scott Firth on bass.

He continued: "That's probably where my predilection towards amphetamines came from. While you're awake, you're alive! But all the illnesses and pain made me what I am."

Lydon also said that despite his recent collaborations with former Sex Pistols bandmate Glen Matlock, he would never write another Sex Pistols song again.

He said of this: "I can't write for the Pistols. Emotionally, I'd be imitating myself, so respect it for what it was. PiL is expression of freedom, and you can't go backwards once you've done that. Any new ideas go into PiL. My inspiration is everything that the human being gets up to. I don't listen to any music when I'm in PiL-zone, because influences can poison your well."

Last month, Lydon distanced himself from re-release of Sex Pistols' 'God Save The Queen', also on May 28, which coincides with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. In a statement he said that the campaign to push the track to the Number One spot is "not my campaign" and claimed it "totally undermines what the Sex Pistols stood for".

Borrowers pay almost double the Reserve Bank's rate

HAVING misread the state of the global economy in the first few months of the year, stubbornly keeping interest rates higher than necessary, the Reserve Bank faces the choice today of not whether to cut again, but by how much.

Last month, the central bank took a machete to interest rates, slicing a larger-than-expected 50 basis points from the official cash rate in a tacit admission it was making up for lost ground.

Undoubtedly, there will be some argument around the table this morning to hold fast, to wait for the impact of last month's super cut to flow through the economy.

After all, official unemployment numbers indicate an economy in rude good health, our economic growth is still the envy of the developed world, public sector debt is minimal, the inflation bogey has subsided and the dollar has been edging lower, providing some breathing space for our oxygen-starved domestic industries.

Some economists believe the RBA this afternoon will cut rates by 50 points in a bid to get ahead of the global downturn.

About $130 billion has been wiped off Australian shares in just over a month, fuelled by the deepening European debt crisis.

All gains this year have been erased, with the benchmark ASX 200 index dropping 2 per cent yesterday to below 4000 points for the first time since November.

Banks blame Europe's financial woes for raising the cost of the money they borrow overseas, plus the fact they are paying more on customer deposits than they were in the financial crisis, when the cash rate/mortgage rate gap was 2.75 percentage points.

The last time borrowers were paying so much more than the RBA cash rate was in September 1994.

Research group and comparison website RateCity said yesterday that higher deposit rates were playing a key role as banks tried to reduce their reliance on overseas money, a tactic that was benefiting savers but hurting borrowers.

RateCity consumer advocate Michelle Hutchison said their borrowing costs had increased because they were paying more for deposits, which were at a record high.

"They have had to counteract that with charging more for home loans," she said.

"They may not all be justified but there are some reasons. We can see there is pressure on the banks."

Choice spokeswoman Ingrid Just said all RBA cuts should be passed on in full to borrowers, and homeowners unhappy with their loans should switch lenders.

"The banks are hugely profitable and given our economic conditions it is only fair they pass on any rate cut in full," she said.

But Australian Bankers Association chief executive Steven Munchenberg said the link between the official RBA rate and mortgage rates had been broken.

Missy Higgins, The Ol' Razzle Dazzle

The sold-out show got off to a sizzling start with the sexy Butterfly Boucher instantly earning the undivided attention of every gay woman in the room, which was most of the audience, with her loud yellow jeans, rock-star looks, fun personality and beautiful voice.

When Missy Higgins joined her on stage to collaborate with her on the keyboard, they looked like the type of funky electronic duo you would come across at a music festival.

It became abundantly clear that these two women have an undeniable synergy on stage and a palpable chemistry, which is a handy thing given Boucher co-produced Higgins' new album The Ol Razzle Dazzle.

Released last Friday, the album marks Higgins' stunning musical comeback after "severe writer's block" caused her to quit showbiz three years ago.

During her 18-song set, Higgins opened up about her decision to quit music when one fan yelled: "We missed you Missy."

"I missed playing and I'm really glad to be doing it again," she responded. "I was struggling to kind of juggle the two sides of my life; the personal and the professional."

The third song she played was Set Me On Fire from her new album, in which she describes music as her saviour.

Everyone's Waiting, about the pressure she felt when she believed fans were waiting to see whether she could muster a comeback, was a passionate performance which conveyed the inner turmoil she felt during her hiatus.

To the audience's stunned delight, Higgins whipped out a bright-red Keytar for her greatly anticipated new single, Unashamed Desire.

Touring, accolades and more touring followed, along with her second album, On a Clear Night.

Well received, and picking up an ARIA or three, along with a No. 1 single in Steer, Missy Higgins was a star shining.

Not entirely comfortable with the transition from private to public figure, Higgins spent the next few years retiring from music, preferring instead to absorb herself in university studies, travel and the usual domestic chaos of living life in a share house in Melbourne.

After considering a life that saw her never returning to music, Higgins was offered a spot on the all-female concert tour Lilith Fair, founded by Sarah McLachlan.

Inspired by the response that her new songs were receiving on the tour, and the number of dedicated fans who came out each night to watch her perform, Higgins realised her songs were bigger than her, and a cornerstone in many people's lives.

From there, writing began for The Ol' Razzle Dazzle, with Higgins touching upon the music industry, her expectations and the conflict within between her personal and public life.

Fresh, and direct from the heart, The Ol' Razzle Dazzle from Missy Higgins is our Album of the Week on ABC Local Radio across the Territory.

AMD adds horsepower to server processors with new 16-core chip

Advanced Micro Devices said Monday that it has added more horsepower to its chip lineup with new 16-core Opteron server chips based on the Bulldozer microarchitecture.

The new 16-core Opteron 6284SE chip will come with a clock speed of up to 2.7GHz, which is faster than the prior 6200 series that maxed out at 2.6GHz. The chip is faster but draws the same amount of power than comparable Opteron 6200 series chips, said Michael Detwiler, product marketing manager at AMD.

The company also introduced the 16-core Opteron 6284 chip, which has a clock speed of 2.4GHz. The new Opteron chips are aimed at high-performance computing and demanding applications such as databases, Detwiler said.

The large number of cores will help data centers by allowing them to efficiently deploy more virtual machines, Detwiler said. For example, Hewlett-Packard is putting the new chips in the ProLiant BL465c Gen8 blade server, which will offer more than 2,000 processor cores per rack. HP will also release the ProLiant DL385p rack server with the new chips. In addition, Dell will refresh its PowerEdge servers with the new chips, according to AMD. Prices for the new HP and Dell servers were not immediately available.

AMD competes in the server market with Intel, which recently started shipping its Xeon E5 server chips, code-named Romley, for servers. HP and Dell have already implemented Romley chips in servers.

Intel has made many throughput improvements in the new Romley chips, such integrating PCI-Express 3.0 at the chip level. AMD's new chips do not support the latest PCI Express protocol yet, but the technology will be supported in future chips, Detwiler said. PCIe 3.0 is limited to high-performance computing, and CIOs are probably not looking at that technology now, Detwiler said.

AMD is showcasing the speed and throughput of Opteron in supercomputers like the Jaguar, the world's third-fastest, at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee. An upcoming upgrade to the supercomputer called Titan will couple AMD's 16-core Opteron 6200 CPUs with Nvidia's Tesla graphics processors. ORNL is gunning for the supercomputer performance crown with Titan.

The Opteron 6284SE draws 140 watts of power and is priced at $1,265 for 1,000 units. The Opteron 6278 draws 115 watts of power and is priced at $989.

AMD also announced Opteron 4200 series chips with up to eight cores for tasks such as those involved in cloud computing. The chips operate at speeds of up to 3.4GHz and are priced from $316 to $455.

Asus previews hybrid laptop-tablet device and all-in-one PC

Asustek Computer (Asus) on Monday showed off a tablet with an ARM processor and the Windows RT OS, becoming among the first of its type shown by PC makers.

The product, called Asus Tablet 600, has an 10-inch display and a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 CPU. The tablet was shown running Windows RT Tablet Preview edition during the Asus news conference at the Computex trade show in Taipei.

The tablet weighs 520 grams, and is 8.35 millimeters thick. Asus did say when the device will be available.

The device is intended to be a highly mobile device, said Jonney Shih, chairman of Asus, during a speech at the news conference.

The device is a breakthrough for Microsoft and ARM, who have worked closely to bring the new OS to devices. ARM processors are found in most smartphones and tablets, and the new device provides a path for Microsoft to compete with other operating systems including Apple's iOS and Google's Android OS.

The new Asus tablet also adds weight to ARM-based devices running Windows, and a possible avenue for Microsoft to break away from its reliance on x86 chips for Windows. Windows grew up on Intel's x86 chips, and so far Windows on ARM devices have only been shown by chip makers such as Nvidia, Texas Instruments and Qualcomm, and users have not been allowed to play around with them freely.

Not that there's anything wrong sitting next to each other, but this looks much better," said Asus chairman Jonney Shih, who introduced the Taichi at a press conference the day before Computex officially begins.

The Taichi was shown running Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 OS, expected to be released later this year. It will run Intel's latest Core microprocessors and be offered with screen sizes of 13.3 and 11.6 inches. The Taichi is "as thin and light" as Asus's current Zenbook ultrabooks, Shih said. He didn't give a price or an exact shipping date.

He also introduced the Transformer All-in-One. With an 18.4-inch screen, the PC looks like a traditional all-in-one desktop but has a few twists that make it unique.

The display has a touch screen and can be detached from the body and used separately, prompting Shih to declare it the world's biggest tablet, as he carried across the stage under his arm. It also runs dual operating systems, Windows 8 and Android. In Windows 8 mode the display can be used as a remote desktop, communicating wirelessly with the base. Running Android it operates independently as a tablet.

However, there are some kinks to work out. Shih couldn't get the display to operate remotely, and as he fumbled with it an error message appeared that declared "this app cannot open." He gave up and moved to the next product.

Also shown was the Asus Tablet 810 with an 11.6-inch screen and the Windows 8 OS. The tablet runs on Intel's next-generation Atom processor, though Asus did not provide further chip details. Intel is scheduled to release an Atom chip code-named Clover Trail in time for release of Windows 8 tablets.

The 810 has an optional dock with a full QWERTY keyboard and a built-in battery for extended run time.

Shih also introduced the Tablet 600, which has a 10.1-inch screen and runs Windows RT on an ARM-based Nvidia Tegra 3 processor.

Asus also introduced the Asus Transformer Book, a convertible notebook with a detachable screen. Much like Samsung's Series 7 Slate, the touchscreen can be detached from the laptop to run in tablet mode. The PC runs on Intel's latest Core processors code-named Ivy Bridge.

Affair, taunt led to honour killing: court

A man accused of murdering his wife's lover in an honour killing "completely lost it" when the victim called him a poofter, a Sydney jury has been told.

Hazairin Iskandar was provoked by Mohd Shah Saemin to the point where he lost self control and stabbed him, James Trevallion, representing Iskandar, told the Supreme Court today.

Mr Saemin, known as Shah, died after he was attacked by Iskandar and his son Andrew outside his Leichhardt flat in Sydney's inner west on the night of February 21, 2010.

Iskandar has pleaded not guilty to his murder, but guilty to manslaughter.

The court heard Iskandar's wife Nita was having an affair with Mr Saemin, who worked with her in the Malaysian consulate, and that rumours of their relationship were spreading.

"This liaison became a talking point within the Malaysian community in Sydney," crown prosecutor Kara Shead said, adding, "People told (Iskandar) he was the husband and he had to stop it."

Ms Shead said Iskandar and his son lay in wait for Mr Saemin outside his flat before crashing their hired car into his car and pursuing him through the streets.

Ms Shead said Iskandar and his son lay in wait for Mr Saemin outside his flat before crashing their hired car into his car and pursuing him through the streets.

The court heard Iskandar stabbed Mr Saemin at least four times to the upper body with a knife while his son struck him repeatedly with a hammer.

"He tried to escape. He ran from his two attackers," Ms Shead said. "Whilst he was running he was screaming out to save his life."

Mr Saemin suffered several blunt force blows to the head, but ultimately he bled to death at the scene from stab wounds.

"It is the crown case that to protect the honour of his family and together with his son, the accused planned to kill the deceased in what they thought of as an honour killing," Ms Shead said.

"This was a pre-planned, premeditated and executed killing.

"The crown case is the accused planned to kill or at the very least seriously injure the deceased."

Mr Trevallion said Iskandar was becoming "very anxious, frustrated, despairing" over the rumours about his wife's affair.
