International borders to remain closed for a further three months

Australians hoping to get back overseas will have to wait it out a little longer, with international borders to remain closed until at least June 2021.

Health Minister Greg Hunt confirmed the three-month extension to border closures on Tuesday, in a devastating blow to the thousands of Australians who remain stranded overseas.

Mr Hunt said the decision to extend the ban on international trave was based on medical advice.

Family of Porter’s rape accuser wants inquiry into her death

The family of a woman who alleged Attorney-General Christian Porter raped her in 1988 wants an inquiry into her death.

It comes as the South Australian coroner mulled ordering an inquest but NSW Police stood by their decision not to interview Mr Porter during their inquiries into the allegations.

Police said on Thursday it would have harmed “future investigative strategies” if they had spoken to Mr Porter before getting a formal statement from the alleged victim.

Communities warned Tropical Cyclone Niran could intensify with 100km/h winds

Tropical Cyclone Niran is hovering off Far North Queensland this morning, with warnings the category two storm could intensify. 

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said the weather system will strengthen this morning.

Residents in areas between Cape Flattery and Innisfail are being warned they could experience gale-force winds of up to 100km/h as the cyclone intensifies.

Fierce fire tears through adjoining Melbourne factories

More than 70 firefighters have spent the night tacking a fire at two adjoining factories in Melbourne's south-east.

Fire crews were called to the blaze on Age Street in Cheltenham just after 12.40am.

External walls collapsed and windows exploded during the fierce fire, which crews were forced to attack from above.

Man attacks eight with axe before being shot by police

Swedish police said a man assaulted at least eight people in a southern town yesterday and that the case was being investigated as ”attempted murder”.

Police said a man in his 20s attacked people in the small town of Vetlanda, about 190 kilometres southeast of Goteborg, Sweden’s second largest city.
