UK's elite schools face a reckoning on rape culture

London (CNN)Nine years after being assaulted by a boy she alleges was a student at Eton College, Zan Moon can still remember the moment as if it was yesterday.

"I can picture the hallway where it happened, his hands around my neck choking me," she says. "Then he put his hands down my pants... It was painful. I told him to stop."
Moon says the five-hour attack took place outside of school in a secluded cottage on England's South Coast, rented for the weekend by a friend at the elite girls' boarding school she attended: Benenden. She was 15 then.
Boys from the two all-male schools the girls often socialized with -- Eton and Tonbridge -- were also there and saw her fight her aggressor off multiple times. Yet no one intervened, she says.

Paula Matthewson: Coalition’s women problem goes far beyond politics

If you are among the small cohort of women who’ve never experienced sexual discrimination, harassment, abuse or attacks then you might not understand why those who have suffered this treatment are particularly angry right now.

So angry in fact that they pose a real threat to our Teflon-coated Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who until now has invested heavily in a blokey-bloke persona.

Too many of us believe women lie about rape. In fact, they rarely report it

For centuries we have upheld the hoary myth that women lie about rape. This is why it matters so much that Linda Reynolds shamefully called Brittany Higgins a “lying cow” in earshot of a group of people in her office.

The Defence Minster said she was not referring to her former staffer’s rape allegation but other statements Higgins made regarding the poor response from her superiors. It matters because when you call a person a liar, you undermine their credibility on all matters. And because for too long women have been falsely accused of fabricating charges of sexual assault.

Police want schools to encourage student sexual assault victims to come forward, even if they decide against pursuing criminal charges, saying details about their experience could provide valuable intelligence.

The information will not be held against people unless they were convicted, but could identify trends or repeat offenders, police told independent school principals at a private meeting on how to respond to sexual assaults, multiple sources told the Herald.

Chanel Contos was in the back room of the converted London warehouse she lives in, her phone buzzing every few seconds with new social media notifications, when she decided to go public with her story of teenage sexual assault.

Her petition for earlier sex education in schools, which began as an Instagram poll, was just beginning to reveal hundreds of testimonies from former Sydney schoolgirls about sexual assaults they had experienced at the hands of their male peers. And it was showing no signs of slowing.

Family of Porter’s rape accuser wants inquiry into her death

The family of a woman who alleged Attorney-General Christian Porter raped her in 1988 wants an inquiry into her death.

It comes as the South Australian coroner mulled ordering an inquest but NSW Police stood by their decision not to interview Mr Porter during their inquiries into the allegations.

Police said on Thursday it would have harmed “future investigative strategies” if they had spoken to Mr Porter before getting a formal statement from the alleged victim.

Sexual predator takes plea deal in murders of two 6-year-olds after LA district attorney reverses course

In a rare deviation from the controversial sentencing policies of Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, prosecutors cemented a plea deal Monday expected to send a violent predator to prison for the rest of his life without the possibility of parole for the murders of 6-year-old Jeffrey Vargo of Anaheim Hills and another boy.

During a hearing in Pomona Courthouse South, Kenneth Kasten Rasmuson, 59, sat shackled at the waist next to his defense attorney and quietly pleaded no contest to two counts of murder with the special circumstance of multiple slayings.

A judge is expected to sentence Rasmuson to life in prison without parole during another hearing on April 27. He was accused of abducting Jeffrey near his home in 1981 and killing him in Agoura Hills. The second boy, 6-year-old Miguel Antero, was kidnapped in 1986 and his body was found dumped in an Agoura Hills canyon.

'Society is changing': A record 5.6% of US adults identify as LGBTQ, poll shows. And young people are driving the numbers.

A record number of U.S. adults – 5.6% – identify as LGBTQ, an increase propelled by a younger generation staking out its presence in the world, a poll released Wednesday shows.

The survey by Gallup marks more than a 1 percentage point jump from the last poll in 2017 in which 4.5% of adults identified as LGBTQ.

The estimated 18 million adults who identify as LGBTQ represent a continued upward trajectory since Gallup started tracking identification in 2012, Gallup senior editor Jeff Jones said.

“It reflects what we are seeing in society and the way society is changing,” he said.

One of the biggest headlines in the 2020 poll is the emergence of Generation Z adults, those 18 to 23: 1 in 6, or 15.9%, identify as LGBTQ. In each older generation, LGBTQ identification is lower, including 2% or less of respondents born before 1965.

For the first time, Gallup queried respondents on their precise sexual orientation, rather than a simple yes or no on whether someone identified as LGBTQ, allowing more insight into identity, Jones said.

Among LGBTQ adults, a majority or 54.6% identify as bisexual, the poll shows. About a quarter, or 24.5%, identify as gay; 11.7% as lesbian; 11.3% as transgender.
