Teens warned of tough jail terms for sexting

Australian Communications and Media Authority said lesson plans and brochures about "sexting" were being snapped up by thousands of schools across the country worried about the trend.

"Over the last month more than 63,000 sexting brochures have been distributed, and over three hundred copies of ACMA's Cybersmart sexting lesson plans have been downloaded," said ACMA's Senior Education Trainer Greg Gebhart.

"The popularity of these educational resources suggests that sexting is a top of mind issue for schools and teachers and is perceived as a growing risk for teenagers."

Federal Government research last month showed one in five Australian girls aged 18 has sent nude or semi-nude pictures of themselves over the internet.

The Government's interim report on cyber safety - High Wire Act: Cyber-Safety and the Young - surveyed more than 33,000 young Australians about their online habits.

"Sharing sexually suggestive images or text messages may be seen as innocent flirting or amusement, but sexting can have serious personal, social and legal consequence," Mr Gebhart said.

It comes after Education Minister Cameron Dick revealed last week he had been approached by Queensland parents concerned about sexting.

Nude and sexual images, videos and text messages of people under the age of 18 are considered child pornography and it may be a criminal offence."

The ACMA has focused on teaching 16 and 17-year-olds about sexting dangers.

Senior education trainer Greg Gebhart said many students were still unaware of potential problems, while teachers were grappling with how to combat the problem.
Most schools would would have to deal with one or two cases of sexting," he said. "It's predominantly photos taken on phones

Planking

Plank, front hold, hover, or abdominal bridge is an isometric core strength exercise that involves maintaining a difficult position for extended periods of time. The most common plank is the front plank which is held in a push-up position with the body's weight borne on forearms, elbows, and toes.
Many variations exist such as the side plank and the reverse plank. The plank is commonly practiced in Pilates and yoga, and by those training for boxing and related sports.
The plank strengthens the abdominals, back, and shoulders. Muscles involved in the front plank include:
Primary muscles: erector spinae, rectus abdominus (abs), and transverse abdominus.
Secondary muscles (synergists/segmental stabilizers): trapezius (traps), rhomboids, rotator cuff, the anterior, medial, and posterior deltoid muscles (delts), pectorals (pecs), serratus anterior, gluteus maximus (glutes), quadriceps (quads), and gastrocnemius.
Muscles involved in the side plank include:
Primary: transverse abdominus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus muscles (abductors), the adductor muscles of the hip, and the external and internal obliques.
Secondary: gluteus maximus (glutes), quadriceps (quads), and hamstrings.
The current world record (according to Guiness World Records) for the plank position is 33 minutes and 40 seconds, set in Queensland, Australia on 11 May 2011 by 68 year old Paul Drinan.

Planking craze sweeps

Seems like the bizarre internet craze for planking is over. Owling is the latest trend sweeping across workplaces around the world.

Owling, believed to have started in Australia, consists of nothing more taxing than crouching on one's haunches and staring into the middle distance like the nocturnal birds.

Participants then take photos of themselves and post them on Facebook or on other social networking sites, reports the Daily Mail.

However, do be wary of your chosen planking destination: an overzealous planker in Australia got arrested after choosing to plank on the trunk of a police car.

Young hooligans and bored teenagers aren’t the only ones who have taken to this trend though.

Australia’s own star rugby player, David Williams, celebrates his tries (the rugby equivalent to a goal) with—you guessed it—a plank.

That’s right, right in the middle of the rugby pitch (aka: field) he lays down, toes and fingers pointed, for a good 30 seconds in total and complete celebration.

I know by now you’re just thinking that the land-down-under is super weird.

Who cares if you and all your friends laid across all the stairs on an escalator and have a picture to prove it? Big deal.

Not so fast. Americans, famous ones too, are now partaking in this new trend.

NBA player Dwight Howard was recently shown on national television to have been caught planking. He chose a car, restaurant counter, and even a museum to show off his 6-foot 11-inch long plank.

Katy Perry planked on a boat on the 4th of July, and uploaded her photo evidence to Twitter.

Singers Justin Bieber and Chris Brown have also been photographed planking recently on top of a boat and a round bookshelf, respectively.

Still not convinced?

Binge Drinking May Affect Memory of Teens

A new study, which examined gender-specific influences of binge drinking on spatial working memory (SWM), has found that female teens may be particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of the habit. Binge or "heavy episodic" drinking is prevalent during adolescence, raising concerns
about alcohol''s effects on crucial neuromaturational processes during this developmental period. Heavy alcohol use has been associated with decrements in cognitive functioning in both adult and adolescent populations, particularly on tasks of SWM.

"Even though adolescents might physically appear grown up, their brains are continuing to significantly develop and mature, particularly in frontal brain regions that are associated with higher-level thoughts, like planning and organization," said Susan F. Tapert, acting chief of psychology at the VA San Diego Healthcare System as well as professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego.

"Heavy alcohol use could interrupt normal brain cell growth during adolescence, particularly in these frontal brain regions, which could interfere with teens'' ability to perform in school and sports, and could have long-lasting effects, even months after the teen uses,” added Tapert.

Tapert and her colleagues recruited 95 participants from San Diego-area public schools as part of ongoing longitudinal studies.

The results showed binge drinking was associated with gender-specific differences in brain activation during the working spatial memory task. Male binge drinkers showed greater activation in all brain regions during the task while female binge drinkers showed less activation than non-drinkers.

For female teenage binge drinkers, these differences correlated with worse performance on the working spatial memory task as well as poorer sustained attention.

Among male teenage binge drinkers, greater activation in the brain translated to better spatial memory performance.

Researchers say the results suggest that teenage girls may be more vulnerable to the toxic effects of binge drinking on the brain while males may be more resilient.

"Females' brains develop one to two years earlier than males, so alcohol use during a different developmental stage -- despite the same age -- could account for the gender differences," Talpert says. "Hormonal levels and alcohol-induced fluctuations in hormones could also account for the gender differences. Finally, the same amount of alcohol could more negatively affect females since females tend to have slower rates of metabolism, higher body fat ratios, and lower body weight."

Researchers say these gender differences for the effects of teenage binge drinking on brain development merit further study.

"These findings remind us that adolescent boys and girls are biologically different and represent distinctive groups that require separate and parallel study," says researcher Edith V. Sullivan, PhD, professor in the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine, in the news release.

"And yet binge-drinking is a dangerous activity for all youth," says Sullivan. "Long after a young person -- middle school to college -- enjoys acute recovery from a hang-over, this study shows that risk to cognitive and brain functions endures. The effects on the developing brain are only now being identified. 'Why tamper with normal developmental trajectories that will likely set the stage for cognitive and motor abilities for the rest of one's life?'"

Mother left wondering if her baby could have been saved

Forrestfield couple say their 18-week-old foetus was disposed of by staff at the Swan District Hospital who had not consulted them.

The North Metropolitan Area Health Service says while the treatment of the patient was clinically appropriate, what happened to the foetus should have been discussed with the parents.

The Department expressed its condolences and says it has met the family to discuss their concerns.

Doctor Hames says the lack of consultation was inappropriate.

"A certain course of events were supposed to happen and it didn't and that was obviously distressing for the mother so I'm more than happy to apologise to her that that occurred," he said.

He says the case will be investigated.

The autopsy was unable to show any problems with the baby, but because the hospital had thrown out the placenta instead of sending it for testing, the reason why she miscarried remains unknown.

Mrs Right became pregnant again this year and went to the hospital again after having severe pains, but staff again refused to run tests or do an ultrasound.
“They just told me ‘no, go home and the baby will pass naturally’,” Mrs Right said.

“They were just saying: ‘if it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen’.
“I knew something was wrong. It’s just a mother instinct, so the next day I went straight to Joondalup Hospital and they were more than helpful.”
Tests at Joondalup Hospital revealed the baby had died.

Mrs Right said after the first incident, the hospital told her they would use her case to ensure that no other parents would go through the same ordeal, but it was clear after her second miscarriage nothing had changed.

A Swan hospital spokeswoman said: “We express our condolences to the family involved for their tragic loss and apologise for any distress caused by the events that followed early last year."
"Shortly after this occurred, senior hospital staff met with the family to discuss the concerns they had regarding the care they received and to apologise.
“Should the couple have outstanding concerns, we welcome the chance to meet with them again to ensure their concerns are resolved.
"We are unable to disclose any further information about the specifics in this case due to patient confidentiality."

ALP gay marriage debate falls flat

Victorian Labor Party had been set to debate the motion on Saturday but its conference came to an abrupt end when the meeting was deemed to be three people short of the required numbers.

The state party had already backed same-sex marriage at its 2009 conference but the latest move would have gone a step further, calling on the ALP national conference in December to incorporate support for gay marriage in the party's policy position.

Hundreds of Labor faithful packed a Monash University hall to hear Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who opposes same-sex marriage, and state Labor leader Daniel Andrews, who supports it, talk about the state of the party.

But numbers had dwindled by Saturday afternoon and debate on the marriage equality issue and more than 20 other urgency motions never went ahead because there were only 147 delegates in the hall when 150 were required for a quorum.

Secretary of the ALP's policy committee on gay and lesbian issues, Jamie Gardiner, said the developments did not change the fact that the Victorian branch had already backed marriage equality.

"Today's motion was simply to reiterate that support and to echo the South Australian branch's resolution in support, calling on the national conference to support marriage equality," Mr Gardiner said.

"I can only assume that elements in the party who knew they would lose engineered a walkout to bring the conference to a premature close."

Other motions had supported same-sex adoption and condemned Ms Gillard for her asylum-seeker deal with Malaysia.

ALP state secretary Noah Carroll said the Victorian branch backed Ms Gillard.

"The prime minister is her own person, everyone understands that, but she has the full support of the party in Victoria and presumably also the federal caucus."

In her first address as prime minister to a Labor Party conference in her home state, Ms Gillard used her keynote speech to push the case for a carbon tax, but left before the urgency motions were to be debated.

She said was proud of Labor's record in Victoria, where it was in power for 11 years before November's election defeat.

We've seen a premier paralysed by indecision, frozen solid, unable to make the hard decisions that Victoria and Victorians need," the opposition leader said.

Internal ructions over the Broadmeadows by-election in February again resurfaced with a motion put to the conference criticising the way Frank McGuire was chosen and calling for changes to the pre-selection process.

Mr McGuire, who ultimately retained the seat vacated by former premier John Brumby for Labor, was selected by the party's national executive after a bitter internal factional brawl and a bloc of unions unsuccessfully challenged his pre-selection in court.

The motion, however, was referred to the party's rules committee for further debate at the October state conference.

Goodrem was all teeth an smiles as Jonas escorted her through the parking lot of the Arclight Cinema in Hollywood, reports the Daily Mail.

Planking death: man plunges from balcony

Planking, which involves participants lying flat on their stomach in different and sometimes dangerous settings and sharing photos of their efforts with fellow plankers, has made news in the past week with the arrest of a Gladstone man.

Police issued the 20-year-old with a court appearance notice on Tuesday night after he was discovered planking on a police car.

However today police said their fears had been realised with the death of a man attempting the new fad.

Shortly before 4.30am a man in his early 20s plummeted from a unit block in Main Street, in inner city Kangaroo Point, and died at the scene.

Deputy Commissioner Ross Barnett told reporters the man "may have fallen while attempting a planking episode.

Deputy Police Commissioner Ross Barnett today said his worst fears about planking had been realised.
“This morning we have seen a young man take this activity a step further and attempt to plank on a balcony. Unfortunately he has tragically fallen to his death,” he said.
Mr Barnett said the 20-year-old and another person had been out during the night and had been planking in various spots on their way home.
"He has tragically lost his footing and fallen to the ground below," he said.
"It is what we've been fearing."
Mr Barnett warned people against taking unnecessary risks in a bid to out-do each other for the ultimate photograph.
“Accepting a risk of injury for yourself is one thing, but the potential is there for others to be injured as a result of your behaviour,’’ he said.
Earlier this week, a man was charged in Gladstone for trespassing on police property when he "planked" across the back of a police car.
If other people break the law during this activity they will be charged as well," Mr Barnett said.

Mr Barnett said the man was reportedly preparing to lie on a balcony rail when he fell.

He said the man and another person had been out during the night and had been planking in various spots on their way home.

"He has tragically lost his footing and fallen to the ground below," Mr Barnett said.

"It is what we've been fearing."

The deputy commissioner could not say whether it was Australia's first death from the recent craze.
