Women inch towards equal legal rights despite COVID-19 risks, World Bank says

(Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Women gained legal rights in nearly 30 countries last year despite disruption due to COVID-19, but governments must do more to ease the disproportionate burden shouldered by women during the pandemic, the World Bank said on Tuesday.

Nations should prioritise gender equality in economic recovery efforts, the bank said, warning that progress on equal rights was threatened by heavier job losses in female-dominated sectors, increased childcare and a surge in domestic violence.

World Leaders Lead Discussion on Global COVID-19 Recovery

The European Union and the World Health Organization teamed with the international advocacy organization Global Citizen on Tuesday to host a virtual panel discussion on global recovery of the COVID-19 pandemic.


The webcast included leaders from the United States and the African Union, as well as actors and musicians seeking to solicit donations from organizations and individuals. The effort aims to set the stage for the world to bounce back from the pandemic, addressing issues such as vaccine equity, world hunger, the climate crisis and international aid.

Aged care residents miss out on COVID-19 vaccine in regional Victoria

Victorian aged care resident Kenneth McMahon was supposed to get the COVID-19 vaccine today, but missed out due to an administration error.

Hundreds of coffins fall into ocean after cemetery landslide in Italy

A landslide on the Italian coast near Genoa caused the collapse of a cemetery yesterday, leading to hundreds of coffins falling into the sea.

The Camogli cemetery, built more than 100 years ago, is situated along an area of rocky seaside cliffs. Francesco Olivari, the mayor of Camogli, called the collapse an "unimaginable catastrophe."
